Golden is the county seat of Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. Founded during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush on June 16, 1859, the mining camp was originally named “Golden City” in honor of Thomas L. Golden. The Colorado School of Mines, offering programs in engineering and science, is located in Golden. Famous western showman William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody is buried nearby on Lookout Mountain. It is the birthplace of the Jolly Rancher, a candy bought out by the Hershey Foods Corporation.
Golden offers some of the most stunning hiking trails in Colorado’s vast park network. Golden Gate Canyon State Park offers more than 30 miles of hiking trails. The park’s 11 trails are named from animals native to this area and have been assigned the creature’s footprints. The Raccoon Trail is a short loop that starts by the brick outhouse just beside the parking area at the popular Panorama Point. This hike is great for families with a dog-friendly policy as long as the dog is on a leash.
