What is there to do in Idaho Springs, Colorado?

Even though Idaho Springs sits at a lower elevation than Denver, you may still feel the effects of an afternoon of sub-zero temperatures or brutal winds. But here in the city’s center, the air is generally clear, the locals are friendly and the vibe is considerably more mellow. The city was first settled in 1859, and it quickly became the county seat of Jefferson County, Colorado. While the city lost this designation in 1891, the amount of historic buildings and preserved grounds in the downtown district makes it a sought-after destination for tourists. Here are some suggestions for how to spend an afternoon in the capital of the Black Hills. 1. Visit the trailhead for St.

Hiking and other outdoors activities

Read More Idaho Springs is a Colorado town on the banks of the South Platte River, near where it meets the Arkansas River, and just outside of Leadville. With Colorado’s highest peak, Mt. Elbert, looming in the background, Idaho Springs is popular for its many outdoor recreation opportunities, including the nearby Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Monarch Mountain Ski Area, and Red Mountain Ski Area. Idaho Springs was named in 1859 after its first settler, Cyrus Ives, who sold his cabin to the state of Colorado for the sum of $500. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, locals became known for their mountaineering accomplishments and were given nicknames like the Crested Butte, Blue Jay, and Old Man.

Downtown Idaho Springs

Winter and the Great Outdoors On a clear day, the snowy peaks of the Rocky Mountains stand erect and proud. But before the crowd can tackle these, a brief scramble from the State Capitol building to the 12th Street Mall and back will calm the nerves of even the most seasoned skiier. Here, a list of places for a beginner, experienced skier, and local for a second chance. Aspen Mountain: A four-hour drive from Denver or a short 35-minute flight from Colorado Springs is an opportunity to jump in a lift and head to the top for the best views of Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana in the west. The north side of the mountain provides winter sports enthusiasts the opportunity to experience in-bounds snowboarding, skiing, and snow tubing.

Places to go in Idaho Springs

Boise Trail

On the way up the mountain, go back roads to the Idaho Springs Trailhead and hike on a 2-mile loop that takes you up to the top of Town Mountain. The trail is right off State Highway 74 just south of Idaho Springs. The mountain provides great views, and a new, interpretive trail allows for interpretation and access to small streams and other natural elements.

Lidgerwood State Park

Just above Idaho Springs, the Lidgerwood State Park is a great place to go hike. It’s a relatively easy, family-friendly trail, running 1.3 miles to Pine Lake. The only bad news is that the lake is dry at this time of year. But this is a great place for families, with lots of play features for kids.
